White Pines Union Club

Unions are typically thought of as fighting for the rights of the little guy, right? But, don't they often end up being privileged institutions instead? For example, the benefits are better for those WITHIN the union. But, there's a limited membership, just by the nature of competition and the fact that unions raise benefits. So, the existence of the union actually increases the chance of a laborer NOT getting a job. That sounds more like the country club premise the union was built to suppress?

I’m Thinking of a Number Between…

If you could choose your own federal tax % rate, what would it be? If you choose zero, and still believe in the federal funding of public services, does that make you immoral?

Sanitation for My Sanity

Do you really care when people don't wash their hands after they use the bathroom, or does it only upset you when you have to see the transgression? Because, intellectually, I know there are loads of germs and disgusting stuff everywhere. But, when someone walks out of the restroom when I'm in there without even feigning an effort, I just don't understand it. Even if you don't want to make it a habit. Please give people like me the benefit of the doubt. Just a quick rinse. We need to pretend the world is clean. Oh, and this has happened REPEATEDLY at my workplace. And I'm never able to look at the person the same way again.

Better Safe Than Rich

How big of an issue is car safety for you? I was looking up a new car I was interested in and saw it had a 5-Star safety rating, and actually got annoyed, thinking how that little fact probably added 2 g's to its pricepoint. I mean, are their certain models that you would just REFUSE to get into because of safety concerns? Cars are safe-ish. That's good enough for me. "Oh, well, if you're driving 85 MPH down a mountain in a monsoon and get struck from a 65 degree angle by a freight train, only this model will make sure you're safe." I'll take my chances. Keep the cupholder air bag, and give me back my 2 g's.

Sabai Says:

"Once upon a time, there was an acorn sitting in a oak tree. Every day, the acorns played and told each other stories about how, once they fell, they'd start turning into beautiful oak trees themselves. But, this acorn wouldn't believe. The other acorns tried encouraging him to fall. But, he didn't want to risk it. Being an acorn was fun. And he couldn't be sure the stories were true. So, he stayed in the tree, enjoyed being an acorn, and was eventually eaten by a squirrel."

Microwaves Are a Sham

Do you remember learning that microwaves cook food from the inside out? I don't believe it. Because my pizza is always cold in the middle, and hot on the outside if I undercook it, just like an oven. Test it out yourself. Put ice cubes in your microwave for 15 seconds. Take them out. Are there holes in the center of them?

Polish Pride

I saw this bumper sticker this morning, and became immediately confused. Because I did not know what Polish people were supposed to be proud of. I understand how terrible of a statement that just was, and that's the point. All the "pollock" jokes I heard growing up in school. Grandmother's on both sides of my family who continually think of people by their nationality. Nationalism just doesn't make sense to me. And yet it stuck with me.

The Boyfice

We've talked about the benefits of same-sex schooling before. And now, I'm curious as to where those benefits stop. For instance, would there be benefits to a single-gender business office? Specifically, the same distractions that are eliminated with same-sex schooling. Obviously, there would be serious cons including the gifts and talents and viewpoints of the opposite gender. But, might the benefits be high enough for a company to gamble on this? Pretending they wouldn't get sued.

How Big is Too Big?

Let's say you have a moral conviction against bigger retail chains, and you try to shop as much as you can at local shops. How successful does the local store have to get before you stop shopping there?

Basketball Leads to Rape

Isn't it funny how all these NBA players just seem to have a propensity for adultery? I think I just picture an NBA team out on the road, after a game, running into bars, looking to drug girls into sleeping with the them. The real picture is probably very different. These guys probably get hounded all of the time. Girls know who they are, and how much money they have. And they are likely begged into adultery every day. Most men who see these athletes as sickos, probably don't have to deal with that same problem. And if they did, they might be sickos, too.
